Mozy Backup Review

mozy backup screen shotMozy Backup is battling it out at the top with Carbonite to be the top online backup service. A nice advantage they have over Carbonite is a free option of 2 GB of space, and also support for MAC.

Mozy Backup Features

Mozy has a desktop application like other online backup services that connects you and your PC to Mozy’s secure backup servers. Their desktop application allows you to either select the types of files you want to backup or select the folders to backup.

They offer simple email backup for Outlook to disaster proof losing your email and settings.

Mozy has the ability to backup locked and open files. This means that even if a file is open Mozy will still add it to the backup set. This is a nice feature since most likely when you’re performing both your initial backup and adding files to the backup you will be working on your PC.

The software has a bandwidth limiter to you can allow it to go faster or slower when uploading files. When it’s going slower Mozy won’t be interfering with you Internet connection speed as much.

After you initial backup you can schedule the time of your backups so they happen when you’re not using your computer.

What Others are Saying about Mozy Backup

“I already love it, it’s so simple. I don’t have to do anything - just see the little box every time it backups - which I have set up to do every 24 hours”

Partial consumer comment from Viewpoints.com

“I’m backing up about 75Gig so far and I havn’t added my Adobe Elements projects yet. Peace of mind, easy to use and ridiculously affordable. “

Using Mozy Backup

Downloading and installing the application for Mozy home was pretty easy. Selecting the files I wanted to backup took a bit of figuring out. I only wanted to backup particular folders in my documents, but it seemed Mozy’s default was to backup my entire documents folder.

Starting the backup was easy, I’d suggest doing your initial backup when you’re not going to be using your PC. This means that Mozy can have full access to your Internet connection and you can speed up it’s transfer rate. I found when I first tried backing up with Mozy it did slow down my connection.

After your initial backup is done it’s just a matter of adding files to the initial backup that are new or changed. This takes no time at all and it doesn’t effect your bandwidth like the first backup does.

While the backup is happening there is a progress bar available to show how much has been transferred, how much is left, and the approximate time it’s going to take to complete. You can also modify the amount of bandwidth Mozy is using in this screen as well.

Restoring files goes off without a hitch using the Mozy interface. It’s as simple as selecting which files or folders you want to restore and clicking restore. This will restore the files to their original location on your PC.

Backup and Restoring

The backup process went well, although as mentioned the initial backup did take some time (because of the number of files). After that it was seamless to add new files to the backup or add files that had been changed (the Mozy software takes care of all this).

Restoring is simple as mentioned above. It depends how many files you’re restoring to determine how long it will take to download and restore the files.
Mozy Support

For the Home version of Mozy backup there is email support available. If you step up to the pro version you also get 24 hour phone support as well.

Verdict on Mozy

Mozy is definitely an easy to use backup solution for home or office. The best part, they have a 2GB trial account you can use for free to get the hang of using their software first before you have to pay a cent.

Their home account offers unlimited backup space, and the ability to schedule backups or reduce the amount of bandwidth the program uses while running. I think for the low price of $4.99 a month Mozy backup is a steal of a deal.
